She Who Brings Gifts
Query
In the Wolof and Swahili dialects of Africa, her name means fire. Maybe that’s why Safara keeps setting her life ablaze. You’d think a dreamwalking doctor would have an edge, but Safara hasn’t used her supernatural ability since her stint with Doctors Without Borders in Argentina. She was fired from that job too. That’s why she was working at Denver General. Until today. Safara’s not surprised. All she knows is disappointment and pain. Then her grandmother dies. She returns home for a wake, but home isn’t home anymore. A militant force patrols the town, mesmerized residents are gathering in the square, a real estate agent is buying up land, and a self-harm epidemic is claiming numerous lives. To help save the town, Safara will have to find the connection between a family secret, a black bird with a scarred left eye, her mother’s past disappearance, and a woman known only as She Who Brings Gifts. SHE WHO BRINGS GIFTS is a 90,000-word Supernatural Thriller that takes us into the past to understand the consequences it has in the present.
Synopsis
Dr. Safara Ceaser is a dream walker, always has been, but she’s also a doctor damn it and strictly adheres to empirical evidence. Yet she’s having visions again. According to her dying grandmother, they are a warning: “Hell is coming and it’s looking for you.” Safara returns home to Timnath Pines for the funeral and finds, as usual, her grandmother was right. Hell is coming in the form of a self-harm epidemic that is ravaging the town and leaving petrified corpses in its wake. Safara is grieving, but the loss of her grandmother has brought memories of the mother that abandoned her, so she jumps on the distraction and vows to find a cure. She learns that the epidemic originated from the cabin of the ever-mysterious Mason Ferris, a Marine vet with theories of a shadow woman that has come to town. Safara thinks it’s a fairytale but believes she can gather samples from the cabin and find a cure for the epidemic before Mason, and others die. Then she comes face to face with the shadow woman. It is her mother possessed by an ancestor named Camea who is feeding the souls of Timnath Pines to a demoness named Ammit. There is only one way to stop her, and all the deaths: A secret, lost to the pages of time. If she can find it, Safara can conjure Tormentors to feed off Camea’s guilt and destroy what’s left of her soul. Safara dreamwalks into Camea’s dark memories, and becomes trapped, but Safara’s mother, still alive in Camea’s mind, helps her daughter escape. Safara regroups with her family and friends to prepare for the final battle in the town square where Camea has gathered people for a mass feed. Her friends and family exorcise Ammit using spells and potions handed down from their grandmother. Then Safara invades Camea’s weakened mind and reveals the woman’s darkest secret; the child she sacrificed to gain Ammit’s favor. Camea is devoured by the Tormentors and Safara saves the town and her mother.
